Mariposa
The campground
A hidden treasure in the forests that surround Yosemite National Park, that is how we see ‘our’ campground near Yosemite: Mariposa KOA.
The exact location of the campground is a little north of the small town Mariposa and even a few miles north of Midpines on the way towards Yosemite.
The campground is build against the mountains, yet the owners succeeded in constructing flat and wide sides for the tent lodges. The campground is covered with high trees and is an oases of pieces and calm.
In the middle of the campground you’ll find a real train from the famous Santa Fé railroads. It now is a playstation for the kids.
The area
Of all the good reasons you have to come to Mariposa, visiting Yosemite NP is of course number 1 on your list. Huge waterfalls and gigantic boulders characterize this park. Driving to the entrance and in the park is an experience on its own, with narrow roads winding through thick forests.
A shuttlebus to Yosemite NP departs from the entrance of the campground. So, you can go back and forth to the park and being driven.
But there’s more around Mariposa. This area has long been a gold diggers place and you can still find many remains of this period. Ghost towns, bridges, musea and other remains are everywhere. Also the cities Mariposa and Oakhurst are from this period.
