The campground
Royal View Campground is named after is magnificent view on the Royal Gorge and Bridge Park. The official name of the campground is Royal View @ Royal Gorge campground. The campground is situated in the dry desert mountain terrain of Colorado and has the impressive the Rocky Mountains in its backyard
The CO-50 runs from Pueblo to Montrose as such forming one of the three major east-west connections through Colorado. The campground is along highway 50, yet at enough distance of the road. The campground’s landscape is great and very well maintained. From the campground you can watch the Royal Gorge Bridge; especially when the bridge catches the sunlight during sunset, you can see it raise high above the trees and mountains around you.
Water is scarce in the area and has to be hauled in by truck. This means you have great drinking water at the campground. The downsite is, that to force everybody to save water, you have to buy coins for the showers. The campground does have a great and for the area uniquely large pool.Our tent lodge is at the edge of low rising trees and bushes that make about half of the campground.
The surrounding
Canon City is a great small place well hidden in the mountains. In the center of the sity you will to your surprise find a huge prison, just beside the road. Don’t pick up hitchhikers dough. The museum of the prison is worth a visit. From Canon City the Royal Gorge Route Railroad departs, a train ride through the deep, steep gorge; that is the Royal Gorge. By the way, this is not a steam train.
The train ride will take you under the bridge, which will be way above your heads. The bridge is build by the Corps Engineers mainly to see f it was doable to make a bridge that high and on that point. It was. It is now the highest expansion bridge in the world. On both sides of the bridge you will find a park wit all kinds of thrill rides and games. Take for example the aerial cable tramway to ‘fly’ over the gorge and descend in an almost vertical train to the gorge floor.
